Deputy General Counsel

A magna cum laude graduate of Mount Holyoke College (Phi Beta Kappa), Ms. Lopez received her J.D. from Columbia University Law School, where she was an editor of A Jailhouse Lawyer’s Manual, a publication of the Columbia Human Rights Law Review. Following graduation she joined O'Melveny & Myers where she remained for eight years, concentrating her practice in commercial litigation. At Harvard she assists the University on a variety of commercial transactions, with a focus on ways the University can protect and manage its intellectual property assets. She advises on health care, privacy, and student affairs issues, on concerns involving the use of human subjects and animals in research, and on issues involving third-party access to research data. Ms. Lopez has spent significant time on legal and legislative matters related to human embryonic stem cell research. She is a member of the University's Incident Support Team, which coordinates the University's response to major crisis events.  She is a former Trustee and Treasurer of the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston.

Peter Katz

Peter Katz

University Attorney

Mr. Katz is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School. After law school he clerked for the Honorable Benjamin H. Kaplan of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and worked in the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, an agency of the City of Boston. He then joined the Boston law firm Hill & Barlow where he became a partner and served as a member of the firm's management committee and as chair of the corporate department and of the intellectual property practice group. He came to the Office of the General Counsel from the Boston office of the law firm Day Pitney LLP, where he was a partner. At Harvard, Mr. Katz advises on the planning and structuring of international projects and assists with consulting and other vendor agreements, licensing deals, and a variety of general corporate transactions. He also counsels on privacy and data security issues. Mr. Katz is a member of the University committee on investment policies for retirement plans.

Julie Faber

Julie Faber

Ms. Faber received a B.A., summa cum laude, from Bowdoin College (Phi Beta Kappa), an M.A. with high honors in Politics from Princeton University, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, Ms. Faber was a University Attorney in the Vanderbilt Office of the General Counsel for fourteen years, providing legal services to Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Medical Center. She concentrated on corporate law, commercial transactions, health law, conflicts of interest issues, technology transfer and real estate. She also served as counsel to the University Conflicts Committee and as secretary to the Board of Trust Ad Hoc Committee on Corporate Governance.

Jonathan H. Hulbert

Jonathan H. Hulbert

University Attorney and Administrative Coordinator

Mr. Hulbert received a B.A. from Reed College (Phi Beta Kappa), an M.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, and a J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif. In 1987, he taught Securities Regulations as an Adjunct Professor at Hastings College of the Law, University of California. Mr. Hulbert practiced general corporate and business law in San Francisco, before coming to the Boston area, where he joined Foley, Hoag & Eliot LLP. Before moving to the General Counsel's office, he was a partner at Foley Hoag for almost 10 years, concentrating in intellectual property and licensing, commercial law, corporate finance and securities law. At Harvard, Mr. Hulbert advises on copyright and intellectual property matters, licensing deals, digitization projects, collaborations, online education, sponsored research, vendor agreements, and a wide range of other transactions and programs.  He also counsels and serves as Clerk of the American Repertory Theater.  In addition to being a University Attorney, Mr. Hulbert is the Administrative Coordinator for the Office of the General Counsel.
